The need to wrap everything up and provide a big end-of-season set piece and a few big twists, along with enough convoluted Speed Force mythology to power a Crisis on Infinite Earths...it’s just too much for one episode to support. Some questionable choices have been made this season, regarding both tone and storytelling, but by the end of tonight’s episode, I was left with the sinking feeling that The Flash I loved has changed into something else entirely.

In the plus column, at least the Zoom arc has been brought to a merciful conclusion. The notion that Zoom would want to settle everything by racing Barry to prove who is really the fastest man alive wouldn’t have been out of place in a Silver Age issue of The Flash; in fact, that sort of thing happened often. It just goes to show how far the TV show has strayed from that spirit that his plan seems so ridiculous here that there must be more to it. After all, Barry just watched this man kill his father in front of his eyes, so he’s not exactly going to be up for seeing who can get to the Eiffel Tower first.

There is more to Zoom’s plan, but it’s revealed in such abrupt, offhand fashion, it feels like a cynical MacGuffin introduced to raise the stakes to something epic and finale-worthy. Suddenly there’s a device called the Magnatar that’s been stolen from Mercury Labs. If fired up with enough Speed Force energy, it can destroy the entire Multiverse, collapsing it all and leaving only Earth-1 for Zoom to rule over. In effect, this would be a simplified equivalent of the Crisis on Infinite Earths from the comics. (We know this can’t happen, though, because Supergirl lives on one of those other Earths and she’s coming to the CW this fall.)

Barry is so fueled by rage and vengeance from his father’s death, the rest of Team Flash can’t allow him to participate in such a race, so they trap him in the Supermax and plan to take down Zoom on their own. Their plan isn’t terrible, by any means, and it almost works. The hologram Caitlin is a nice callback to earlier in the season (and it’s a great relief to learn they weren’t dumb enough to send the real Caitlin in there), and if Joe hadn’t been within Zoom’s reach, everything would have gone according to plan. (Except...haven’t we established that Zoom has the power to open breaches? So couldn’t he just come back, like, immediately?)

Wally still believes in the Flash, so he releases Barry from his cell and the race is on. In case it’s difficult to tell exactly what’s happening, Harry provides helpful commentary like “He wants to power up the Magnatar!” and “He’s powering up the Magnatar!” The writers must have been very unsure about this scene, because there’s a lot of that sort of handholding to explain how Barry has created a time remnant who sacrifices himself to power down the Multiverse-collapsing whatsit, allowing Barry to beat up Zoom until the time wraiths show up to destroy Zoom. It’s definitely a comic book-ish turn of events, but I’m not sure any resolution could have been truly satisfying given how disappointing the Zoom arc was overall.

This leaves time for a couple more twists, the first of which couldn’t have come as much of a surprise to many of us. The man in the iron mask is indeed the real Jay Garrick, a speedster Zoom plucked from another universe, and he is Henry Allen’s doppelgänger. The second twist is much less expected and much more ill-advised: Barry time-travels back to the moment of his mother’s murder again, but this time he saves her. The previous Barry watches this happen and vanishes from existence. The timeline has been rewritten, but to what extent we can’t know yet. For now, it sure looks like this finale cheapens last year’s finale, along with all the lessons Barry learned (or thought he learned, anyway) since then.

Maybe this is a way for the writers to hit the reset button and bring back the goofy Silver Age spirit of adventure that made the first season such a treat and has been present only sporadically this season. If that turns out to be the case, I’m all for it. I’d love a season three with no speedster Big Bad, one with room for the Rogues and Gorilla City, and maybe, finally, Mirror Master and Elongated Man. I hope that’s the case, but I fear this less fun, more brooding version of The Flash may be here to stay. To paraphrase Tina Turner, we don’t need another Arrow.

Stray observations

    Harry accompanies Jesse and the real Jay back to Earth-2, raising questions about Tom Cavanagh’s future participation in the show. Will he become an occasional guest star, or will events early next season convince him to return to Team Flash? His goodbye scene was one of tonight’s most effective moments, but I’d really hate to see him go.
    So no Kid Flash and no Jesse Quick, even though the show appeared to present the ideal circumstances for this to happen when both Wally and Jesse were hit by the dark matter wave. Were they ever planned for this season? Did time just run out? Or did the creative team decide there were already too many speedsters in the mix?
    I’m glad there’s a real Golden Age Flash out there, and I’m glad it’s John Wesley Shipp.
    Even when the show was pushing toward the Barry/Iris relationship over the past few episodes, neither the characters nor the writers appeared ready to fully commit to the idea. So perhaps it’s appropriate that Barry basically tells Iris, “Maybe we’ll do this later?” They finally kissed and exchanged I love yous, at least. That may have to hold the shippers a while.

The Flash loses a loved one as Zoom unleashes the metapocalypse

Like its title character throughout most of this episode, “Invincible” is brimming with a confidence that has been missing too often this season. Right from its opening minute, which plays like a live-action version of a crazy splash page from a Silver Age comic book, the hour never lets up even as it finds time for banter and heart-to-heart talks among all the regular players. The only question is, what took so long? Why cram the entire “metapocalypse” into the penultimate episode of the season? At times “Invincible” felt like a recap of a multi-episode arc about Central City under siege from a horde of Earth-2 villains, offering tantalizing glimpses of a major event that could have been a lot of fun if played out at length. Maybe that’s too much to ask of a CW budget, however impressive The Flash often is within those constraints. As it is, the result is easily the most satisfying of the Zoom-centric episodes this year, even if the ending leaves a sour aftertaste.

It’s clear from the beginning that Barry’s time in the Speed Force has changed him. It’s the equivalent of a religious conversion, and that’s the way the rest of Team Flash views him as he expresses his unbridled optimism about defeating Zoom and all his minions: as a zealot. He’s got the Speed Force down in his heart and now all things are possible. To his credit, this newfound confidence brings out the best in him as a leader. For once he doesn’t need to mope around until he gets a pep talk from a father figure; in fact, it’s quite the opposite, as both Henry and Joe (as well as Iris) try to reel him back in a bit. This time Barry takes charge of the situation, coming up with the idea of neutralizing the Earth-2 metahumans by using their vibrational frequencies against them.

On the other hand, Barry’s sense of invincibility blinds him to a few things right in front of his face. For instance, he brushes off the fact that Black Siren would have killed him if Wally hadn’t shown up just in time to run her over with his car (which was pretty hilarious and easily my favorite Wally moment to date). Then again, that wouldn’t have been possible if Barry hadn’t blurted out the address right in front of Wally in the first place, so maybe he’d be justified in believing it was all meant to happen. The other big thing Barry doesn’t notice is the “Dead Meat” sign hanging around his father’s neck. Okay, so Henry Allen isn’t literally wearing a sign, but if Barry has ever seen an episode of television before, he should have recognized the signals. Beloved character returns after a long absence; said character has heartfelt talk with son, expresses his love and belief in him; having fulfilled his purpose, character is murdered by lead villain in order to spark hero’s quest for vengeance in the season finale.

It’s more than a little disheartening that the CW superhero shows can’t seem to find any other way to raise the stakes besides having the hero’s loved ones killed off by his Big Bads. I mean, didn’t Arrow just do this? (Yes, which is why Katie Cassidy was able to free up her schedule for this episode.) It’s true that Henry Allen doesn’t really have a place on the team, but after Barry spent the entire first season trying to win his father’s freedom, this can’t help but feel a little cheap. That’s not to say I’m 100 percent sure John Wesley Shipp is gone for good: we still haven’t seen the man behind the iron mask, and the fact that Henry’s mother’s maiden name is Garrick at least suggests the possibility that Shipp will turn up as the real Golden Age Flash.

The death of Henry Allen aside, though, ”Invincible” is a thoroughly entertaining hour. As she proved last season, Katie Cassidy is a much more lively presence on The Flash than Arrow usually allowed her to be. Cisco and Caitlin going undercover as Reverb and Killer Frost is pure gold, as is the interplay between Cisco and Harry over the vibrational frequency doohickey. There are well-played character beats throughout, from Caitlin overcoming her PSTD by getting back to doing good with the team, to Harry switching headphones with Jesse when hers malfunction, to Cisco discovering a new power in a moment of crisis.

That ending is worrisome, though, because it suggests the creative team has learned the wrong lesson from Barry in this episode. The Flash is at its best when it is genuinely optimistic, when its characters truly believe they can accomplish their goals with humor and a spirit of adventure. Yes, the show needs darkness, too, but the balance has been out of whack too often of late. Whatever else the season finale holds in store, it should bring closure to the Zoom storyline. At the very least, that’s a step in the right direction.

Stray observations

    At least John Wesley Shipp finally got to share the screen with Amanda Pays, his co-star on the 1990 version of The Flash. There’s still a trace of the old chemistry there, which makes it even more of a shame that he’s been killed off.
    Tina McGee figured out on her own that Barry is the Flash, and Zoom revealed it in front of Wally. Just publish it in the paper already, Iris.
    “Why do so many villains we go up against use sound as a weapon?” “WHAT?”
    That dinner at the end was going pretty well until Cisco vibed Earth-2 splitting in half. It was all downhill after that.

Oprah Winfrey made $12 million from one tweet about bread

Oprah Winfrey just made more news, saying she lost 26 pounds on her Weight Watchers diet. Even better, her wallet got a lot fatter. According to Market Watch, Winfrey racked in a whopping $12 million for merely writing about how she was able to lose weight and still eat bread.
"I lost 26 pounds, and I have eaten bread every single day," she said in her testimonial clip.
An hour after O sent her story into the Twitterverse, Weight Watchers shares climbed slightly over $2 a share, and since Winfrey owns roughly 6 million shares, the surge in share prices made the celeb $12 million just like that.

Oprah as a board member and large share owner of the company. She's made a fortune since her October investment. Using a price of $13 a share from Tuesday afternoon, that means she's made $61 million on her total investment.

On a per-pound basis, that's $2.36 million of profits gained for each pound lost.

She has the best of both worlds: getting richer while getting slimmer.

Oprah's October investment came at a price of $6.79 per share. She bought about 6.36 million shares, which cost her $43.2 million.

She was also granted 3.51 million options to buy shares at that same $6.79 price. Combining shares and options, her total stake is worth almost 10 million shares — 9.88 million shares to be more specific. The stock has practically doubled in that time, even including the rapid decline in the past several weeks.

Drake and Nicki Minaj excited about reconciliation between Lil Wayne and Birdman

Drake and Nicki Minaj are reportedly happy with Lil Wayne and Birdman’s recent reconciliation.

According to TMZ reports, the two artists were forced to take sides during the year-long dispute, which began in December 2014.

Lil Wayne aired his frustration with Birdman and Cash Money via Twitter over their alleged refusal to release his highly anticipated album, Tha Carter V.

‘Nicki and Drake backed Lil Wayne for obvious reasons, but we’re told they still had love for Birdman since he paved the way.’

According to TMZ: ‘We’re told Nicki and Drake felt boxed in, scared to death they’d be caught talking to Birdman.’

Tyga also addressed Lil Wayne and Birdman’s reunion during an interview with Streetz 94.5 earlier.

The L.A. rapper referred to the falling out as a typical, family spat. ‘It’s good, Wayne’s family’. He said.

‘When you got history with somebody, you always gonna go back to that.’

Here are your quick and dirty, editorial-free WWE Royal Rumble 2016 results. The show was headlined by the Royal Rumble match, featuring the WWE World Heavyweight Champion defending in the Rumble for the fist time since 1992.

WWE Royal Rumble 2016 Results:

– Kickoff Match: Jack Swagger and Mark Henry defeated The Ascension, The Dudley Boyz, and Damien Sandow and Darren Young. This earned Henry and Swagger spots in the Royal Rumble match.

1. Last Man Standing Match: Dean Ambrose (c) defeated Kevin Owens. Ambrose retained after shoving Owens off the top rope through two tables at ringside.

2. Tag Team Championship Match: The New Day (c) defeated The Usos. Before the match, Xavier Woods debuted his new trombone, Francesca II. New Day retained the championship after countering a top rope splash attempt into The Big Ending.

3. United States Championship: Kalisto defeated Alberto Del Rio (c). Kalisto pinned Del Rio with a Salida del Sol to win his second United States Championship.

4. Divas Championship Match: Charlotte (c) defeated Becky Lynch. Ric Flair interfered, tossing his jacket in Becky’s face. Charlotte hit a spear to win the match and retain the championship. After the match, Sasha Banks came to the ring, challenged Charlotte, teased an allegiance and ultimately locked her in the Banks Statement.

5. Royal Rumble Match: Triple H was the winner. AJ Styles made his WWE debut, entering at #3. He lasted in the match until he was eliminated by Kevin Owens. Owens was eliminated by Sami Zayn in another unexpected moment. Near the middle of the match, Vince McMahon and the League of Nations pulled Roman out through the ropes and incapacitated him, putting him through a table. Roman was taken away by EMTs. Brock Lesnar was eliminated by the already-eliminated Wyatt Family in a 4-on-1 attack. Roman returned late in the match to get a batch of eliminations. Triple H entered at #30.

The final four were Triple H, Sheamus, Reigns and Dean Ambrose. Reigns eliminated Sheamus with a Superman Punch, only to be eliminated by Triple H. Triple H eliminated Ambrose to win the Rumble match and become the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
